# Human-as-the-Loop

> Human-as-the-loop is the degenerate form of human-in-the-loop AI — a person reduced to approving machine output they had no hand in shaping — and the quiet failure mode of one-button authoring in regulated content.

> **Human-as-the-loop** is what "human-in-the-loop" degrades into when the economics do the designing: a person whose entire remaining role is to approve machine output they didn't shape, from sources they didn't read, on a timeline that makes real verification impossible. The loop still *contains* a human — that's what the compliance slide says — but the human no longer contains any judgment. They are the loop's rubber gasket.

The failure is structural, not moral. Put a reviewer behind a firehose of generated content and give them accountability without agency, and you get the worst of both architectures: machine-scale volume with human-scale verification, minus the craft knowledge that made human verification effective. Approval quality decays exactly as approval volume rises. In pharmaceutical content this isn't an abstraction — the person nodding through unverified claims is nodding them toward [the MLR wall](/perspectives/the-mlr-wall/), or worse, *is* the wall, eroding.

The distinction that matters is **where judgment enters**. In the [co-creation model](/perspectives/co-creation-model/), judgment enters at creation: the writer decides what to claim, the machine binds each claim to its evidence, and downstream approval verifies a substantiated artifact. In human-as-the-loop, judgment is asked to enter at the end, after the machine has already committed to sentences — the single most expensive place to inject it, and the place where "approve" is most likely to mean "didn't have time to check."

A test for any AI deployment in intelligence work: *could the human explain, for any given output, why it says what it says?* If yes, the human is in the loop. If the honest answer is "the model wrote it and it looked fine," the human is the loop — and the difference will eventually be measured in findings, letters, or worse.
